What comes to mind when you think of an apple? Perhaps it is the red, luscious fruit with a crisp flesh – basically how it is depicted on TV and cartoons.

However, there are many varieties of apple, and they come in many shades of green, red, or even yellow! These varieties also have many uses aside from being eaten fresh.

Let’s tackle the yellow apple varieties and how they can be incorporated into your dishes.

11 Types of Yellow Apples and Their Uses

1. Golden Delicious

This variety is small to medium in size, and has small lenticels on its thin skin.

Its flesh is white, and has a sweet, butter and honey-like aromatic flavor. However, its flavor highly depends on where it is grown.

In a cool climate, it has a sweeter flavor due to the increase in the amount of acid.

Meanwhile, it has a lighter taste when grown in warmer areas since the acid content tends to be lower. 

Because it is thin-skinned, Golden Delicious must not be stored for a long time, or it’ll develop bruises and shrivel.

This apple variety is best when eaten fresh, or it can be used on your salads, pies, sauces, and preserves.

It can also be a good ingredient for your burgers and sandwiches. 

Golden Delicious is in season from fall through summer.

2. Jonagold

The Jonagold is a cross between two apple varieties, namely Jonathan and Golden Delicious.

Developed in the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in 1968, this variety is large in size compared to other apples.

It has a crisp and perfectly balanced flavor, combining the sweet-tart taste of the Jonathan, and the Golden Delicious’ fragrant honey-like aroma.

It will offer you with a crispy, juicy, and creamy yellow flesh.

Available from October through July, the Jonagold is best for both cooking or eating fresh or it can be used to make sauces, jams, and preserves.

You can also incorporate it into your pies, tarts, muffins, or cakes.

Not only do they make excellent desserts, Jonagold can also be added to your salads, or as a side dish for your pork and root vegetable dishes. 

3. Newtown Pippin

The Newtown Pippin is a medium-sized apple with a juicy, yellow or greenish-white flesh.

It comes in various shapes, some of which are flat, or oblong and has a refreshingly balanced taste of sweetness and acidity with notes of pineapple. 

For the best flavor, use this apple one to two months after it’s been picked from the tree, otherwise it will be hard and unpalatable.

The Newtown Pippin is a versatile apple that can be used in cooking, drying, juicing, making hard cider, or simply eating fresh.

It can also be used to make jelly, jams, pies, or applesauce. It also makes a perfect match with apple spices, including nutmeg and cinnamon.

When stored in a refrigerator, this variety can be kept for up to three months. The Newtown Pippin is available from mid-fall to winter.

4. Crispin

Also known as Mutsu, the Crispin is a large-sized apple which was developed by mixing the Golden Delicious from America and the Indo apple from Japan.

Its flesh is crunchy, grainy, and very juicy with mixed flavors of sweetness, spice, and honey.  

Crispin can be consumed fresh, or can be used in cooking, baking, and making salads, pies, and sauces.

It is available in September and October, and can be stored for a few months.

5. Blondee

Blondee resembles its Gala apple parent. It is a medium-sized apple variety with a bit of russeting in its stem and tan-colored lenticels on its skin.

This firm, crunchy apple is resistant to bruises, and its white flesh browns slowly.

It has a light, less acidic, sweet flavor, with notes of ginger, green banana, honey, and lemon. 

Blondees can be eaten fresh or used to make pies and tarts since they are capable of retaining their shape after baking.

They can also be mixed with other apples to make applesauce.

This apple variety is in season from late summer to early fall, and can be stored in the refrigerator for two to three months.

6. Criterion

Criterion is a tall and large apple variety, highly resembling the Red Delicious’ size.

Its parentage comes from Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, and Winter Banana.

It has a crunchy, juicy flesh with a sweet aroma, and a light tangy flavor that is not too tart.

This is a versatile apple that can be eaten fresh, or can be added to your salads. They can also be used to make sauces and pies, or can be juiced, dried, or made into a cider. 

Criterion is in season from fall to early winter months, and can be kept in the refrigerator for two to three months.

7. Silken

A cross between Honeygold and Sunrise, the Silken apple is a medium-sized fruit with a smooth, wax-like, thin skin.

Its white flesh is crisp, crunchy, fragrant, with a balanced taste of sweet-tart, honey, and an average amount of acidity.  

Silken apples are best when eaten fresh, or can also be sliced and served as an appetizer.

It is tasty when added to salads or dipped in caramel for a sweet fruit dessert.

It can also be used to make sauces, juices, ciders, or can be baked to make tarts, muffins, and cobblers.

Although available only for a short season in the early fall, Silken apples can be stored in the refrigerator for four to six weeks.

8. Winter Banana

Despite its name, Winter Banana is not a banana, rather a large-size apple with a smooth, glossy, yellow skin that is sometimes covered in pink-red blush when exposed to the sun.

Its ivory to pale yellow flesh is crisp, semi-coarse, and juicy. This apple variety has a fruity, tropical aroma that resembles bananas and pineapples.

Its taste is light with a mixed, balanced flavor of sweet and tangy. 

Winter Bananas can be consumed fresh, or served with nuts and cheeses.

It can be added to salads, or pressed to make juice and cider, baked, or cooked to make applesauce.

Winter Bananas’ flavor match well with caramel, honey, other fruits, and spices including cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. 

Winter Banana is in season from late fall to early spring, and can be stored in the refrigerator from one to four months.

9. Ginger Gold

Ginger Gold is a cone-shaped apple variety that varies in size. It has a cream-colored, with a fine texture flesh that browns slowly when cut.

With a flavor that is sweet, lightly tart, with a little spice, Ginger Gold is often described as one of the most delicious early-season apples.  

Ginger Gold is best suited when making pies and tarts, but they can also be eaten fresh.

It can also be dried, or tossed on your salad and their flavor is a perfect match for recipes that include cinnamon and brown sugar.

This apple variety is in season from late summer through late fall, and can be stored in the refrigerator for up to three months. 

10. Belle de Boskoop

Belle de Boskoop is a medium-sized apple with a lumpy, round, and a bit squat shape.

It has a thick, crisp flesh that is white to pale green in color. Its gives a dry, tart, and aromatic flavor that softens and sweetens as it is stored. 

Being one of the most in-demand russet apple variety in the market, the Belle de Skoop can be used to make pies or challa.

It is also chopped or grated, and added to waffles, pancakes, and batters and excellent for use in sauces, apple butter, or chutney. 

Typically, the Belle de Boskoop is in season from late summer to early winter.

11. Golden Supreme

Golden Supreme is a medium to large-sized apple with a coarse-grained, and cream-colored flesh.

It is juicy, and has a crisp texture with a taste that resembles the Golden Delicious.

It is very sweet, light, with notes of spiciness, and almost no acidity. 

Golden Supremes can be eaten fresh, or can be added to appetizer plates since they do not brown quickly.

They can also be baked, or used to make cider.

Golden Supremes are in season from late summer through spring, and can be kept in the refrigerator for up to three months.
